Will rising frequency and costs of auto insurance claims hurt your wallet?

A troubling development has emerged in auto insurance: Nationwide, the cost and frequency of claims is on the rise. However, experts say this surprising bump shouldnt trigger higher auto insurance premiums at least in the short term.

A recent study from the Insurance Research Council, a nonprofit unit of the American Institute for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters and the Insurance Institute of America, found the nationwide cost of auto insurance claims rose between 2008 and 2010. Throughout the past decade, those costs have declined or been stable.

Hospital Industry Commercial Claims Up

There has been a rise in the hospital industry’s professional liability claims frequency and severity, according to a new benchmarking report on professional liability claims trends in the hospital industry.

The study, conducted by Zurich, a property and casualty insurance provider globally and in North America, is based on Zurich’s claims data (through 2008, the latest information available) of 343,000 non-zero claims and $27 billion undeveloped losses from approximately 1,150 hospitals nationally.

10 Highest Vehicle Claims Rates

An analysis of insurance claims from 2008-2010 by the Highway Loss Data Institute reveals the Cadillac Escalade to be the most targeted vehicle for car theft; the report also reveals the Escalade to incur overall theft losses more than 10 times the average vehicle.

Escalades routinely top the HLDI’s list of vehicles with the most theft claims, with the Escalade EXT ranks the worst with more than 14 claims are suffered per 1,000 insured vehicles. While Escalades are more than six times as likely as the average vehicle to be targeted by a thief, the next four vehicles on the list, and five out of the top 10, are pickup trucks.

Incurring significantly higher losses than every vehicle in the top 10 except the Escalade, are the Ford F-250 and F-450, which occupy the second and fourth slots, and the Ford F-350 in the seventh spot. T
