The U.S. Department of State has issued an updated travel warning for U.S. citizens traveling to Afghanistan due to ongoing security threats and reminds U.S. citizens of the danger of kidnapping, assassination, and retaliatory insurgent attacks. At this time, no part of Afghanistan is considered safe from violence and the potential does exist for hostile acts against U.S. and Western nationals.

Travel in all areas of Afghanistan is not save due to military operations, landmines, bandits, and more. The security situation remains volatile and unpredictable with some areas experiencing substantially increased levels of violence.

U.S. citizens involved in property or business disputes, which are a common problem in Afghanistan, have reported their lives being threatened. No U.S. citizen should assume that local law enforcement or the U.S. Embassy officials will be able to help in resolving these disputes.

U.S. citizens are encouraged to enroll in the  Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive currently updated information on travel and security within Afghanistan.
